Description: Issues on fraud and ethics in organizations have blanketed the news for years, and particularly since 2001 when "Enron happened." What leads to fraudulent and unethical behavior in organizations? What are employee and HR perspectives on the issue? What are organizations currently doing to overcome these issues? What more do organizations need to do to be good "corporate citizens"? What can we do as organizational psychologists/related professionals?

 

November 3 - Dr. Lauren Manning Salomon, MD Anderson Cancer Center

Topic: Nurse Recruitment and Selection

Description: Due to a national nursing shortage, hospitals in the Houston medical center are becoming more resourceful about recruiting and retaining the best nurses. M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is the nation’s top cancer hospital, and is also a magnet hospital for nursing. Dr. Salomon will discuss the main challenges that hospitals are contending with regarding recruiting and retention, as well as steps that are currently being taken to address these challenges. Opportunities for contributions from the I/O Psychology community are suggested.

 

December 8 - Dr. Reuven Bar-On

Title: The Impact of Emotionally and Socially Intelligent Behavior on Performance

February 2, 2004 -- Round Table Discussions  

Topics:

Time: 5:30-6:00 pm social time; 6:00-7:00 pm round table discussions

Location:  Dessert Gallery, 3200 Kirby Drive (in back; behind Cafe Express)

For this meeting, we will try one of the more popular "alternative" meeting
formats that was suggested in our 2003 member survey. It will be a "coffee
table" format where we will hold two concurrent (facilitated) conversations.
One will be about leadership/executive development and the other will be
about organizational development (i.e. two of the most popular topics in the
member survey). Mark Friedman and Eric Brown will facilitate.  Meeting participants may move between the discussions as
they like.

March 29, 2004 -- Round Table Discussion  

Topic:  Psychological Effects of Mergers and Acquisitions

We are providing an open discussion of the psychological effects of acquisitions. No, this is not a memory and verbal learning meeting. We will describe the changes that occur when an organization takes over your organization.  We will identify psychological effects of acquisitions and the challenges they pose for managers.  The coordinator will be HAIOP Board Member Edward J. Pavur, Jr., Ph.D.  Salento sells light meals, salads, natural fruit drinks, wine, desserts, and of course coffee.

Description: Today's HR landscape is increasingly complex and risky.  Yet one of the most frustrating parts of our job as HR professionals is that we are seldom included in critical strategy sessions at the management table.  More and more we hear that we should partner with management, but how?  In this fast-paced 75-minute  talk, Mark Friedman shares some ideas about how we as Human Resource professionals can get an equal place at the management table.

About the speaker:  Mark is a principal in MJF Associates, a full-service Human Resources Development Consulting firm based in Houston Texas which specializes in Executive Coaching, Leadership Development, Strategic Focus, Team Building, Career Planning and Outplacement.  Mark received his Ph.D. in I/O Psychology at the University of Tennessee and has over 25 years of experience.
